Lighting Fires for Homeschoolers

Homeschool thoughts

There has been some confusion going on with the Homeschool Weekend at the DUCKS for this weekend May 15th and 16th.  The person that set this up with us originally is no longer with the DUCKS.  Please do not us the 877-887-8225 number to pre-register!!  For this special event use 800-335-2279 and ask for the Homeschool Weekend special!!

Due to either the confusion with the numbers or what the Mad Science workshops had to be canceled due to not enough pre-registering for it.  But the ride on the DUCKS is still happening.

The ride is an active 70 minute ride with lots of fun involved!  They have given us a great discount on ticket prices:

5th Grade and under – $6 regular (ages 4-11) $12.00 plus tax
6th grade – 12th grade – $10 regular (ages 12+) $20.00 plus tax
Adults – $16 regular 36.23 plus tax

We hope that we have a great turn out. Each time we have a good turn out for an event it encourages them to do other events and also encourages them to pass the word along to other businesses that we are trying to work with.

Again if pre-registering for the event call 800-335-2279.  You can just ask for the Homeschool Weekend special when you arrive but pre-registering gets you into a certain spot and guaranteed to be in at that time.

Hope you are having a blessed day.

Just wanted to let you all know that the special classes for Homeschool Day are almost all full.  I am putting a link to the pdf (schedule update) of the update on the classes.  The times in red are totally sold out and the others only have a few openings left.  There will be other things to do in the city but once these classes are filled that is it, first come, first serve.  Make sure to get your homeschool friends to sign up!

We are really looking forward to this years events.  We hope to see you there!

Just a quick update on Homeschool Day at Silver Dollar City.  The classes have been filling up and some new ones have been added.  Please take a look at http://www.match-inc.org/2009Schedule.pdf to see the updated information.  All classes are now being scheduled through Silver Dollar City.  So make sure to call and get pre-registered.  All of the paid classes MUST be signed up before October 3rd.  To get the discounted prices on the two day tickets you MUST also call before hand!

For more information about the big event and discounted hotels for this weekend go to http://www.match-inc.org/sdc.html.  The hotels listed have made a special attempt to give some good discounts to us for this weekend.

This is going to be our biggest Homeschool Day yet and we are very excited about it.  You don’t want to miss out!! Come renew friendships with other homeschoolers from past years and make some lifetime friends.

We look forward to seeing you there!

As the Homeschool Day at Silver Dollar City approaches we want to make sure those of you that are planning or want to attend are able to enjoy everything.  But please let me stress that the workshops that you have to pre-register for and pay for are filling up fast.  Unknown to any of us, people started calling in on Monday and registering and one of the classes is all ready almost full!  So, don’t want until the 24th to call in and pre-register DO IT NOW.

For those that wanted more information about the cooking class that cost $10 is as follows:

The Culinary & Craft School salutes the Great American Cowgirl with three great western recipes, perfect for Homeschool students ages 8 and up. We will jump in the saddle with a presentation on Southwestern Potato Salad made with red potatoes and a zesty seasoning. You’ll also learn to make a hearty meal with our Campfire Baked Beans, loaded with savory sausage. And for a sensational side, we’ll show you how to make crisp Corn Fritters, drizzled with Silver Dollar City’s own sauce. During the 4pm class, learn kid-friendly cooking tips as Debbie walks through each dish and then take the recipes home to recreate them yourself!

Classes are approximately 60 minutes in length and are limited to 34 people. These classes are not recommended for children ages 8 and under; parents/guardians please use your discretion when making reservations. Seating in the Demonstration Kitchen is open 10 minutes prior to your scheduled class, available on a first-come basis as you check in at the Culinary & Craft SchoolVisit www.sdcculinarycraftschool.com to make your reservation or to see a list of classes to come.

Make sure that when you sign up for the cooking class to sign up for Cowgirl Cuisine class on October 3 at 4:00.  They will be working into the class a beginning to cook session for those new beginners.  This class is open especially for the homeschoolers but the tickets that are bought before hand will be open to those that want to attend otherwise.

We are seeing a lot of people signing up for the free workshops also, and don’t want you to miss out on these either.  Once the workshop (either paid ones or free ones) are filled that is all that will be able to attend these special events this year.  So don’t wait until last minute.  For more information about the events and time schedules going on that day go to http://www.match-inc.org/sdc.html.  To sign up for the free events go to http://www.match-inc.org/rollercoaster.html and http://www.match-inc.org/marvelcave.html.  To sign up for the paid workshops call 800-417-7770 you can also get a meal ticket when you call.

You can have your tickets and workshop handbands mailed to your for an extra $3 or pick them up when you arrive at the City.  Without the handbands for the different workshops you won’t be able to attend so if you have them mailed to you MAKE SURE TO NOT FORGET THEM!

Watch for signs as you arrive that will guide you to the sign-in booth at the horse shoe behind the water wheel.  We will have goodies for everyone and the schedules for the day and maps.  Make sure to bring your homeschool friends with you.  This is the biggest that Homeschool Day has ever been at Silver Dollar City and we are planning for a wonderful day.

Don’t miss out on any of these wonderful new adventures that are being made possible.  It will be a fun, busy and educational time for everyone.  Make sure to bring a lot of energy with you and your camera’s to help remember this day.

We look forward to seeing you there.

SpellQuizer is a really neat program for kids to use!!  It runs on Windows and is VERY easy to use.  You can use the spelling list that they have pre-made or you can make up your own.  To make up your own you need to have a very inexpensive mic.  Not only does it give the words for the kids to spell but it also uses the word in a sentence.  It reminds me of a Spelling Bee.  You can go change the lists at any time.  This is a great buy and very helpful!  You can also import and export your spelling list.  The price is right, too!!  It is only $29.95 and is downloaded to your computer quickly.  You can get a FREE trial version for 30 days.  You will find that spelling isn’t as hard to study for because it becomes a game and not work!!  You can get your copy at http://www.spellquizzer.com.

The writer has given us a copy to give away and we are very excited about this opportunity!!  The Homeschool Day at Silver Dollar City is fast approaching us and we will be giving the 100th person to sign up for one of the free classes that will be taking part during our big event.  Go to http://www.match-inc.org/sdc.html to see more information about the big day and to sign up for the events.  We are all ready starting to see people sign up, now you can look forward to another reward for that big day!!

This is just in time for the new school year!!  Hurry and sign up and see if YOU will be our winner!!

Calling all Homeschoolers!

Excitement is in the air, lots of work is being done, time is short, Homeschool Day at Silver Dollar City is drawing close.  This years big event is October 3 & 4 and it is going to be BIG.  Yes, a lot of work has gone into this years planning and not everything is complete yet, so there will be a few surprises.  Last year we asked for feedback from those that attended the event and there was some request and you will see that a lot of those are being done this year!!  Make sure to look at our schedule, yes we do have special times for doing some of the events this year, and make plans.  The main event is October 3 and then the 4th is an extra day for you to do rides or whatever you would like while you are at the city.

One of the big request was for us to bring back the physics class, this has been done and on a bigger scale than before.  Please note that the classes have to be pre-registered for due to limits for the classes.  We have some classes that are totally free and others that you will have to pay either $5.00 or $10.00 for.  The cost is to cover what the vendors are allowing the kids to do make and learn with but they have tried to keep it as low as possible.  The classes have a limit so that the vendors can spend more time with each child.  Again, all the classes have to be pre-registered for.  The classes that you pay for will be registered through Silver Dollar City when you pay for them, a wrist band will be worn for these classes so that the vendors know you are registered and have paid for them.  The free classes need to be signed up through us, you will find the sign up form online.

We have some motels again this year that are working with us to give you discounted rooms.  Make sure to check them out!!  Silver Dollar City is also offering meal tickets for the event.  If you purchase these they will save you about $5 and they can be used anywhere in the city.

To find out all the information about what will be going on this year go to http://www.match-inc.org/sdc.html.  If you have any questions, please feel free to ask us.

When you arrive please come to the Horseshoe at the Guest Relations House.  When you sign in you will receive goodies for your children, buttons, name tags, information about the day, etc.  If you need any of the following they come on a first come basis.

WheelChairs Price
Electric (Advance reservation to guarantee you will have one)
$34.00
Push (Advance reservation to guarantee you will have one) $6.00
Lockers .50 each entry
Strollers
Single $11.00 full day
Double $15.00 full day

We are planning for a big time of learning and fun.  Don’t miss out!  If you have season passes you do not have to worry about buying tickets.  However, you do need to pre-register for the classes and check in at the Horseshoe on Oct. 3rd.

Pass this along to your friends, this is only for Homeschoolers.  We look forward to meeting you and having a great time together.

Blessings,
Orilla Crider, MATCH Director

Do you feel like you are running on a treadmill? Do you want to have sweet relationships with your children as they are growing up and not experience the heartache of rebellion and immorality? Do your children have greater purpose in life than just to have fun? Be challenged and find ways that God can set your family on a journey of spiritual unity, purpose, and direction.

Dear Homeschool Friends and Families,

Attached is the updated registration form for the FHE Back-to-School Homeschool & Leadership Conference.  Due to changes in Missouri law and interest from homeschoolers across the state to learn about these changes, we have broadened the scope of this conference from the original focus of building leaders.  While that is still a main objective, educating Missouri homeschoolers about these updated statutes and training new homeschoolers in record-keeping and curriculum planning has been added to our list of goals.  HSLDA Attorney, Scott Woodruff, is our keynote speaker and will address the law directly in a free session on Friday, August 7, and then present two workshops on Saturday.

We have also had to change the venue to a larger facility.  The new location is First Baptist Church of Grandview, 1416 Main Street, Grandview, MO.  This location offers easy access from 71 Highway, a larger vendor hall, and more classroom space.

Please feel free to share this with other families, your friends, support groups, e-groups, etc.

Hello Missouri educators!

I am the contest coordinator for the 5th Grade Arbor Day Poster Contest in Missouri and wanted to give you a brief update on the changes in store for next year’s contest:

*         We are going entirely electronic this year.  Packets will not be printed by the National Arbor Day Foundation.  Instead we will send postcards to 5th grade art teachers to announce the contest.  The postcard will direct teachers to the website to download the materials.

*      We will mail the postcards in late September/early October.  Missouri’s deadline for next year will be February 11th.  The theme will be “Trees are Terrific….and Energy Wise!”

*         I am building an email group for 5th grade teachers.  If you have email addresses for 5th grade teachers who would like to receive the email notification, please send them to me so I can add them to my email group.

Thanks for all your help in making the contest a success.  More information will be coming this fall!

Sincerely,

Donna Baldwin
