Dear Homeschool Friends,

It is hard to believe that we are already in the month of February. I do
believe that we have seen first this year in Missouri as far as the
weather goes in a long time. The saying goes "if you want different
weather just wait, it will change tomorrow." We have seen tornado's,
snow, ice and summer weather - we've had it all! I have never heard so
much thunder during the winter as we had last week here in the West
Plains area.

If you haven't gone to our website in a while, the main one, you will
want to. We have done a lot of work on trying to update different parts
of the site. We have updated the different events that will be going
during the year. As always, we will be updating information as we get
more events in.

Another part of the site that has recently been updated is the Teacher
Helps <http://www.match-inc.org/teacher.html> area. A lot of the links
had quit working and we took them out and added some new ones.

If you are looking for a support group, make sure to check out the
Support Group Information <http://www.match-inc.org/support.html>. We
have just loaded the different support groups that we know about on our
website. If you find that we don't have a group, please feel free to
send the info into us so we can provide it to others that might need
it. Also, if you find any mistakes, please let us know that, too.

Our biggest news this month is the opening to the 2008 Online Convention
<http://match-inc.org/convention>! You will find that we have numerous
vendors this year and have some wonderful speakers and topics! We are
getting new speakers added to our list all the time. The workshops will
be out for a certain length of time and then we will take the ones that
are out there now and put new ones on. So make sure to check back often
to see all the changes!

May each of you have a day! God bless each and everyone of you.
In the service for Him and homeschers,
Michael & Orilla Crider

*Five Easy ways to Save at the Grocery Store*

/By Rhonda Barfield/

When you paid for your groceries this past week, did you feel a sense of
satisfaction with the amount of food you bought for the money? Or are
you like many Americans, frustrated with high costs at the supermarket?
It's true that groceries can be expensive. But chances are, with a
little planning and know-how, you can buy much more than you're buying
right now without spending more. Follow these tips to make the most of
your hard-earned food dollars.

1) Take charge of your grocery shopping. Set a realistic limit on
spending. Could you get by with $90 a week rather than $115? If so,
that's an extra $100 in your pocket every month. Go to the store rested
and well fed, with a list and a general menu plan in mind. Don't let
supermarket displays manipulate you into buying what you don't need.

2) Shop the cheapest store in the area. I used to think I did so, until
I compared prices. What an eye-opener to find a discount outlet with
groceries for 50% less. Take a price notebook along as you shop a
different store each week for four to six weeks. When the results are
in, you can make an intelligent decision on where to purchase the most
inexpensive food.

3) Buy mainly what's on sale. Wherever you shop, go for the bargains of
the week. Plan your menus around these specials. Last week, I stocked up
on half-price arm roast, brown rice, non-fat yogurt and cauliflower.
Guess what we're having for dinner this week?

4) Simplify your eating--- and buying--- habits. Convenience food prices
can quickly destroy a grocery budget. But you, as a smart shopper, can
offer cheaper substitutions: oatmeal, whole wheat pancakes, muffins or
scrambled eggs for breakfast, for example, instead of name-brand cereal.
In the process you'll probably save at least a couple of dollars for one
breakfast alone. That adds up over the course of a week.

5) Let the store help you. Store personnel are usually friendly and
willing to help. Let them. The produce manager can tell you which fruits
and vegetables are in season and cheapest. Ask about less-than-perfect
fruit for sale, such as slightly brown bananas; many stores throw them
away, but if enough customers ask, they're likely to sell such produce
at discount. . . and you can make banana bread.

Meat managers might recommend good inexpensive cuts, and also suggest
ways of tenderizing and cooking meat. One Christmas, I asked a store
butcher's opinion on the best brand of whole hams. He actually
recommended the cheaper variety; when several were sliced for customers,
he said, this brand was consistently leaner. Even better, the store
offered a $2.00 off coupon and the company, a $5.00 rebate on the ham. I
took advantage of all this, of course. But I never would have known
about it without the butcher's help.
There are dozens of ways to cut back on your food costs, and you can
read about them in my book, Feed Your Family for $12 a Day. In the
meantime, try these five simple ideas for saving at the grocery store.
Enjoy an extra $10, $20, $30 or more in your pocket each week.

5 Secrets to Making Learning Fun

/By: Jennifer Berry <http://www.ladypens.com/profile/Jennifer-Berry/6118>/

Most teachers want to incorporate fun into the school day. Some,
however, simply don't know where to begin. They have the right attitude,
but don't know how to deliver. Students who have fun during class end up
learning more because there minds are actively engaged. For teachers
with a hard time incorporating fun, here are 5 secrets to making
learning fun.

*Involve Everyone*

Some students fall through the cracks because they never speak in class,
are never called on, and don't complete their homework. They feel no
ownership nor pride for school. This can be easily corrected by simply
involving each and every student in class. It is more fun being involved
in class than sitting back like a bump on a log. Call on students that
don't have their hands raised. Go around the room and have each person
read a paragraph out loud from the study material. If students feel
invested in schoolwork, they will be more likely to have fun and succeed.

*Involve the Entire Body*

No one likes to sit in class listening to a lecture for an hour. It gets
boring and monotonous. To incorporate more fun into learning, try to
engage the entire body. Have children move around the room. Play active
review games. If you must lecture, have your students take a five minute
break to stand up and wiggle their arms and legs. Fun doesn't have to be
silly all the time. Simply moving around can make an otherwise boring
lecture seem uplifting.

*Positive Reinforcement*

One of the easiest ways to add some fun to your class is to use positive
reinforcement. Students not only detest, but also dread classes that
make them feel dumb. If your class is made to think they are excelling
or performing well, they will be more likely to succeed. You will see
smiles on their faces instead of looks of dread. The only way fun can be
introduced into the school day is if the children feel comfortable
letting loose. Giving positive reinforcement is the way to accomplish
that goal.

*Working in Groups*

Group projects are tons of fun for students. It allows them to talk and
discuss their answers with peers. If there is a worksheet assignment,
for example, let the students work in groups of 3 or 4. Not only will
they enjoy the change of pace, but they will also learn from each other.
Group learning kills two birds with one stone.

*School Day Variety*

No school day is fun if the routine is the same day in and day out.
Change the schedule and add variety to your class. Students love to try
new things. Have them complete worksheets one day, and the next day have
an outdoor study session. Videos also make for wonderful variety. They
allow students to take a break from the traditional school day.

There is nothing like a little fun to get a child to learn.
Incorporating fun into the school day not only makes you a great
teacher, but also encourages knowledge comprehension.

*Teach the Subject Your Child Will Use Everyday - Money
*/by Vince Shorb /

Can you imagine a scenario where your child is in their mid-thirties and
still buried in student debt? This is a reality for many parents. By
including financial literacy in your homeschool curriculum you will have
an instrumental role in providing a brighter future for your child.

In talking with parents that homeschool their children, most understand
the importance of teaching practical money matters. Unfortunately, many
parents don't know where to start. They never received a practical
financial education in school and there is a shortage of homeschool
financial education curriculum on the market.

If you do not currently homeschool your kids, you must when it relates
to the subject of financial literacy! Financial literacy isn't taught in
most public high schools and in recent surveys it has shown over 70% of
young adults look to their parents as the primary source of financial
education.

School curriculum is focused almost exclusively on the subjects need to
get young adults to be accepted into college. That's important however;
equally important is the need to be financially prepared for when they
step on a college campus. The moment they arrive on many college
campuses the credit card companies are right there offering free gifts
for any student that signs up for a student credit card.

So that your homeschooled child is prepared for the financial real world
when they go off to college here are some simple steps that will help
you feel confident that they can handle the temptation of easy credit
and succeed financially.

1. Relate money to lifestyle. Most young people are not motivated by
having a large bank account. It's what money provides them that gives
them the encouragement to learn money management skills. It's the
experiences they want to have, places they want to travel, the people
they want to help and getting the toys they dream about.

Discover what your child wants, what they dream about and relate that to
money. It's a great homeschool exercise that allows you to connect with
your child on a deeper level while teaching them a valuable skill.

2. Develop a savings plan. Give your child a head start by developing a
savings plan. As a part of your homeschool curriculum, have them manage
their own finances and create a working budget. If your child still
lives at home require them to save at least forty percent of the money
they earn or are gifted for long term savings. This not only will get
them started building a nest egg but will help them develop a good
savings habit.

An essential element to include in your homeschool budget curriculum is
to help them understand the difference between a 'need' and a 'want'.
Wanting a $5 dollar cup of coffee everyday adds up to over $1800 per
year. This essential homeschooling lessons will help to counteract the
years of 'buy, buy, buy' advertisements they are exposed to.

3. Open Accounts. To have your child participate in a real world
homeschool activity that will set them up for the future, have them open
their savings and checking account. Your child will need them anyway so
why not get them started early. Plus you will find that the longer
relationship hey establish with a bank the more benefits they will receive.

Their student checking account is the center of their finances. It is
suggested they open two student savings accounts. One for long-term
savings and another student savings account for fun things they want to
experience. The long-term student savings account will give them
financial security while the fun student savings account allows them to
fully experience life now.

4. Invest early and consistently. A key math theory that is vital that
your homeschooled grasp is compounding interest. This allows your child
to make money off the initial investment plus all the money the money
that the investment already retuned.

In your homeschool math curriculum, show them how fast a small
investment can add up. Just a $80 investment made each month could mean
over a million dollars in their account when they are in their fifties.
Homeschooling your child with these practical financial lessons will
give them an advantage that most people won't have.

Financial education needs to be a central part of your teenager's
homeschool curriculum. With a practical financial education they will
avoid the most common financial mistakes, be able to enjoy life more and
will be well on their way to securing their financial future.

Help your child get on the right path to their financial future by
receiving free financial education video lessons at
http://www.FreeBy30.com now. These lessons were developed by young
America's success coach and author of 'Financially Free by 30', Vince
Shorb.

When your Homeschooler Hits College Age

/By: Kim Yonkers <http://www.ladypens.com/profile/Kim-Yonkers/2825>/

When you first decide to homeschool your child, it can be overwhelming.
All sorts of questions abound: what should we study; how; am I
qualified? After you've gotten yourself into a routine, though, many of
those uncertainties seem to fade away as you and your child discover the
world together. However, after you've been at it for a few years, you're
bound to notice that your child is reaching the age where people start
asking about college.

That opens up a whole new can of worms for a homeschooler, and a whole
new set of questions pop up. Will my homeschooler get into a good
college? Will admissions officers look negatively on the homeschooling
experience? Will my child fit in with the other students who are coming
from a traditional school environment? The list is practically endless!

However, as most homeschooling parents are pleasantly surprised to
discover, homeschooling doesn't work against your child when it comes
time for college. In fact, many of the nation's top schools seek out
homeschooled students because of their diverse learning experiences and
broad knowledge base! The admissions process may be a little different
for homeschoolers, who may or may not have completed many of the
standardized tests that are offered in traditional school settings.

Many of the top schools take the time to interview every student they
are considering for acceptance. An interview is the best place for the
homeschooler to shine. It's a chance to show all the knowledge and
skills that are gained from homeschooling and it's also the best place
to show the independent thinking and maturity that often results from
staying out of the traditional school setting. Since homeschoolers tend
to be surrounded by adults more than children, they often demonstrate an
ability to relate to the college environment more easily than a
traditional student who has been indoctrinated in deference to authority
and obedience to random rules designed to handle the herd.

The fact is, the college life is a lot different from a high school
atmosphere. Most courses a student will take throughout their
postsecondary education require few prerequisites that don't come
directly from the college experience. A high school course in history is
quite different from one in university: high school courses are designed
to teach facts and basic skills, while a college course is designed to
teach theories and independent thought.

The one aspect of the college admissions process that your homeschool
student may miss out on is some of the scholarship opportunities. Many
of the sports or club scholarships require participation in a high
school environment. However, there are many scholarships available that
aren't tied to these activities, or will accept participation in
community teams or clubs as equivalent. Make sure that you put the same
effort into researching your college applications that you do into
creating your homeschool experience.

*

*Skills Tutor*

This is a wonderful tool to have for any homeschool mom. Are you looking
for extra help for your students? This is just what you need! You have
numerous activities to choose from to have your student(s) do. You can
choose from the California Content Standards or California Content
Standards for CAPA (Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science) for your
student to work with.

This program gives you the area to pick what subject you want to use
with your student(s). If you have multiple students you can add as many
students as you need and even add a note for each student. You also set
the Mastery percent for each subject and student. The default is 80
percent.

This online program also has a place to print reports for each student
for each class that they do work in. It tells if the student(s) are
up-to-date, falling behind, or ahead of him/herself. The teachers area
also lets you preview what the student will be working on when you
assign them the work. There are classroom guides for each class for you
to view or print out so you know what is expected.

The student area has it where the student(s) clicks on his area and it
takes him to his lessons. The student clicks on each lesson and as he
finishes them it grades them and then puts the percentage on the
assignment. There is a "Student Assignment Detail" the list the students
name, user name, class, assignment, teachers name, period of time, site,
and the mastery percent grade. Under activity it list all the activities
that the system or the teacher has assigned and the date that each
assignment was completed, the score, percent and how long it took for
them to complete the assignment.

This program is *NOT* available to individual homeschoolers EXCEPT
through the Co-op. However, Houghton Mifflin has set a retail value of
an individual subscription at $149. But through the Homeschool Buyers
Co-op <http://www.homeschoolbuyersco-op.org/24865760/> you can purchase
it for only *$79*. This is for the online subscription with access to
all subjects, all grades at anytime. *MATCH highly recommends this
wonderful addition to any curriculum.** *

Are you like a lot of other Christians and homeschoolers and don't like
it when you type in a word in Google or another search engine that you
come up with a bunch of pornography sites? netTrekker d.i. is the
solution for homeschoolers!

For as little as *$29.50* for a year you can have a wonderful search
engine. This program works just like any other search engine but they
have gone through the searches and taken out the bad sites.

History has always been a love in our family. Want to look up a person
in history, you will find all sorts of links for them. Do you need help
reading for your child? They have inserted a wonderful plus and that is
where you can highlight the area that your student needs to read and
that portion will be read out loud to them. They have pre-loaded
searches for each age group - elementary, middle and high - in every
subject including religion. They even have a list of themes that you can
look up.

Would you like your student(s) to read about current events without the
trash, this is where you will find it!

This is a wonderful resource to have for your student(s) without having
to worry that they might see something that you don't want to put before
their eyes.
