Dear Homeschool Family,
Here it is already April and with it brought more showers! :-)
We want to let all of you know that we hope that you are safe from any
terrible damages that may have happened with these storms. We know we
have heard of some in several different areas that were hit and some
have lost all. If you know of any that need help, please let us know so
that we can post the information to others in our network so if there
are those that can help will be able to.
We are getting ready for the SHEM convention that is held in
Springfield, MO. If you can make it to this wonderful event you will
find it was worth your time. The leaders of this group are a wonderful
crew to work with and do all they can to make the 2 1/2 days as helpful
as possible.
One of the big advantages to going to a homeschool convention,
besides getting to hear helpful workshops and get to see what different
vendors have, you will receive from most of them a discount during those
days. Some will give you a percentage off or free shipping or both.
One of the vendors will be giving 20% off plus free shipping during the
event.
As we draw to a close for this year, we want to remind everyone to
make sure that you have your record keeping up-to-date. This is a must
by law and we as Christian's don't want to show a bad standing if we are
called to court.
May God keep and bless each of you.
In His service for homeschoolers,
Michael and Orilla Crider

*Homeschools Exposed*
/by Kayley Kenzie/
What do you think of when you think of homeschools? Most people
picture children who have no social skills whatsoever, or children who
miss out on great learning opportunities. Some people assume that
parents who decide to homeshcool their children are radicals, and rather
odd.
Interestingly enough, most parents who start up homeschools have
college degrees and simply want to improve their child's education. A
great homeschooling program will also dissolve some of those stereotypes
linked to social development.
I have found other family homeschools where I live. By reaching out,
we have established a co-op that allows around ten homeschooled children
to meet and learn together.
I also favor music lessons and club athletic teams. My children are
socially skilled and well-rounded.
There are a lot of techniques to choose from when starting a
homeschool. Some of them cover Christian, eclectic, classical, natural,
and theme-based learning. It would be wise to research all these
different methods to get an idea of what's best for you and your children.
In my own research, I discovered that many methods and materials are
duplications of what public education uses.
It's important to be aware of the potential problems that can crop
up when using materials that concentrate on performance-based education.
These resources have a tendency to stifle creative thinking.
If you're one of the many families starting homeschools, you'll have
a serious task ahead of you when it comes to deciding on the best method
for addressing the needs of your children. You might even decide to
combine multiple techniques.
It's also important to realize that each child has their own way of
learning. That's one of the marvelous things about homeschools. Parents
can enhance their children's strengths and strategically transform
weaknesses into strengths.
Families who are just starting to learn about homeschools and how to
run their own should stay up-to-date on all the latest information and
resources. There are plenty of good publications that can help you with
homeschooling issues and ideas.
On top of all this, you can find online resources, courses, and
tutors. All of these can help you enhance your curriculum. Homeschools
can offer the best methods of addressing a child's needs.

*/Home Schooling Subjects:
What To Teach Your Children/*
by James Masterson
/ Homeschooling is legal in all 50 states, and day after day, more
parents decide to homeschool their children instead of letting them
attend public schools. This may be due to countless reasons,
nevertheless, home schooling isn't any lesser than formal education./
/The first dilemma that may enter a parent's mind when he or she
decides to homeschool his child is what to teach. Fortunately, some
states require certain subjects to be taught to students. Colorado, for
example, requires children be taught in communication skills of reading,
writing and speaking, mathematics, history, science, literature, the
Constitution of the United States and civics./
/Different states require different subjects and different numbers
of teaching hours for homeschooling; however, this should not limit the
potential of homeschooling. Homeschooling is the most lenient of the
schooling systems, and as long as the minimum requirements are attained,
a parent shouldn't have any problem. /
/One of the good points of homeschooling is the freedom to teach
almost anything to your child. Parents should focus, aside from the
general subjects, on things that their children are most interested in,
on skills that they enjoy using, as these will be very useful to the
child when he goes to face the real world./
/Consequently, homeschooling need not be confined in the four walls
of the house, as schooling in itself isn't confined to the four walls of
the classroom. Some parents of homeschooling children organize
get-togethers and field trips with neighbors. Homeschooling doesn't have
to be an anti-social experience; rather, it should be a way to promote
socialization using the parameters of the real world. There are no
school rules, but the ethics of the real world apply./
/There are may types of homeschooling approaches. Those most popular
are structured, interest-initiated, and eclectic. Structured is more
like the formal education you get at school and is probably the most
formal of all approaches. The interest --initiated approach, on the
contrary, focuses on real life experiences, and the children learn based
on their interests. The eclectic approach makes use of a random, or
chosen combination of all other approaches, depending on the family's
needs./
/Indeed there are times that homeschooled children excel in
socialization and communication more than formally schooled children.
However, not all homeschooling is good schooling, and not all
homeschooling programs are applicable to your child. This is why you,
with or without professional programs, should monitor what to teach and
when to teach it. /
/It doesn't matter if you just want to explore home schooling
possibilities or have made the decision and are looking for a guide to
point you in the right direction, "The Parents Guide to Home Schooling"
will provide you with the information you require.

*Choosing Curriculum for
Special Needs Homeschoolers*
/by Carrie Lauth /
/
/ Have you made the choice to homeschool your special needs child?
Likely, regardless of your child's type of disability, there are
countless resources available for choosing the curriculum that best
meets their needs. /
/If you will be purchasing curriculum, as opposed to creating your
own, it is best to consider several packages before making a final
decision. There are many wonderful companies which offer special needs
curriculum. If you make a purchase before researching thoroughly, you
may overlook a program that would have been more suited to your child's
needs. You might want to ask around on homeschooling message forums or
with local homeschool groups for recommendations. /
/Visit your local library or bookstore. Or check Amazon.com for
books on special needs homeschool. Many informative books have been
written on this subject. Read the recommendations of other parents. Find
out what worked well for them and what didn't./
/Join a homeschool group, either locally or online. Parents are
always willing to share their thoughts on curriculum they have used and
how their children benefited from it./
/Although joining an online homeschool group may not be as 'hands
on' as joining one in your area, it may be more advantageous, in this
particular situation. Chances are, if you do a search, you will be able
to locate a homeschool group that caters to the same special needs as
your child./
/If there is a non-profit organization associated with your child's
special need, contact them. Oftentimes, they have information on
educational materials, which have worked well with children dealing with
the same issues. Some of the organizations even lend out or help
families purchase these materials, if cost is a factor./
/Visit websites geared toward teachers and lesson planning. They are
easily located by performing a simple search, using your favorite search
engine. Many have forums that you can join, where you can get answers to
all of your curriculum-related questions./
/There are many websites that provide printable worksheets and
teaching aids, for special needs children. You will find that a large
number of these sites have been created by Moms (and sometimes Dads) who
have special needs children, themselves. These parents are usually more
than happy to suggest curriculum options that have worked well, in their
situation./
/By doing a bit of preliminary research, you will have no problem
finding teaching material for your child, regardless of his or her
special need. /

*Recipes for Homemade
Protein Snacks*
/by Steve Hanson /
/
Looking for something to take with you on the road, or a snack to
munch at your desk? Forget about those awful Powerbars and other various
soy bars. Granola bars are OK, but they do not have much protein. High
quality protein bars are available at the store, but for $5 a pop! We
are looking for something cheap and easy, and here it is.
Do-it-yourself, homemade protein bars.
*Homemade Protein Bars: The Recipe*
3 1/2 cups rolled oats
1 1/2 cups dried milk
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 cup lite syrup
2 scoops protein powder
2 large egg whites or 1 egg
1 1/4 cup orange juice
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup raisins or dried fruit
Start by preheating the oven to 325 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with
waxed paper, or spray on some non-stick butter flavored Pam spray. In a
large metal bowl, mix all the ingredients until the oats are well
coated. Spread the mix onto the cookie sheet and press down to make 10
cutting lines so you can separate them into 10 protein bars later. Bake
for 15 minutes or until golden brown. While still warm, cut them apart
and allow to cool before wrapping. The bars can be stored airtight at
room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
*Optional Upgrades*
Nutty Bars - use 1 cup chopped nuts instead of dried fruit or raisins.
Fruity Bars - experiment with various extracts other than vanilla to
change up the flavor.
The Protein Bar Diet - make a whole bunch of these bars with various
fruits and nuts, and various flavors of protein powder. Eat the bars for
3 out of 5 meals each day and make the other two meals small. Do this
for a month and see if you don't drop a couple pounds.
*Who likes peanut butter?
Who likes brownies?*
If you are anything like me or the rest of the bodybuilding /
powerlifting / weightlifting world, you answered 'ME ME ME!' to both
questions. If so, this recipe is for you. I could not post an easier
recipe and prepping a meal can't be quicker unless you are unwrapping a
protein bar. That said, on with the recipe!
*Peanut Butter Protein Brownies : The Recipe*
1 scoop of protein powder; chocolate, vanilla, or peanut butter
1 tablespoon natural peanut butter milk or water
Mix all ingredients together in a small glass bowl; do not use plastic.
If the resulting mixture is too thick add a couple drops of milk or
water to loosen it up until it reaches your desired consistency. Since
it is already in a glass bowl, microwave on high for 30-45 seconds.
Mixture should come out to a cake/brownie like consistency.
Many friends of mine have doubted this recipe, thinking the peanut
butter protein brownies would be mediocre at best. Instead what they
find is a protein party in their mouths. Give this one a try for a quick
high protein, high 'healthy-fats' snack.
*Today's Lesson About Plastics*
The reason I make a big deal about the use of a glass bowl, is
because you do not want to be cooking anything in microwave safe plastic
containers. Plastic containers contain trace amounts of phytoestrogens,
which seep into food when it is stored or cooked inside such containers.
A lifetime of these estrogens can have a negative impact on testosterone
levels and they tend to promote cancer in laboratory animals. It might
not kill you, but your best bet in today's toxic society is to avoid
anything that could possibly be related to cancer. Every little bit helps.

*Multimedia Classroom American History Series*
*Vol. 1*
*Benjamin Franklin*
/by the History Channel/
The pictures were very colorful and would hold a students attention.
I found it very interesting to watch and then go to the interactive part
where the students can take a closer look at Ben Franklin and answer
questions regarding his life and then think about what it might be like
if they lived in his time and what they would do.
The biggest problem I have with this DVD is that it seemed that they
were stuck on his "sexual" part of his life. They made sure to point out
that his oldest son was illegitimate and that Reed and him weren't
really married but were married by common law. They pointed out that he
couldn't stay away from the women over and over and that he deserted his
wife during the time of her need just because he wanted to spend time
with the "other" women in his life. From a young child I was taught to
hold Benjamin Franklin up as a hero because he played one of the
important parts in our country. But this DVD made me feel that he
shouldn't be a hero but someone that we as Christians should keep our
children from studying. There was a lot more to Ben Franklin that just
the women and that is what we should be highlighting on. As I see
things, we all have things in our family that we would rather not have
brought out to the light and now that he is gone why bring up all the
wrong and ruin the wonders he did for our country.
He not only was important to our country to being free, but he made
some wonderful discoveries that we might not have today if he hadn't
been given the gift to discover and use his hands by the Creator.
Overall, I love the concept of the DVD and then the interaction with
the CD. But from a Christian perspective, I feel we need to be careful
how we let historians crush what has been hero's to our children for
several generations.

Seat Belts**

Over the past few months I have read over and over where there have been
accidents and if the person(s) involved would have just worn their seat
belt as the law tells us to, they would still be a live!
Please make sure to teach your kids to buckle up every time they get
into the car! As a fire chiefs daughter, I have heard how terrible
these accidents are and I would love to see them to end!
The poster below makes since if you think about it. Remember as
Christians, God is looking at what we do and so do others around us.
Obey the law!
*Bethlehem Institute*
Bethlehem Baptist Church of Minneapolis in cooperation with Northwestern
College offers INSIGHT, a freshman year of college ideally suited for
homeschooled students. The church is a congregation of 4,000, pastored
by John Piper, the author of over thirty books. (For information on the
church itself, go to our website _www.hopeingod.org
<http://www.hopeingod.org/>_.)
The INSIGHT curriculum integrates Bible, History, Anthropology and
Philosophy, covering the history of civilization from creation to the
present day from a Christian and missions perspective. Those taking the
INSIGHT program are official Northwestern College students and receive
fully transferable credits from Northwestern.
Our methodology is unique in that for each class we bring in a person
with particular expertise on the day's topic including professors from
Northwestern College, Bethel University and Bethel Seminary. Each year
the students have had over forty Christian scholars lead their
discussions. We believe there is not another freshman program like this
in the country that exposes students to so many godly teachers who are
experts in their field of study.
The INSIGHT program offers financial benefits as well. The tuition is
just a fraction of that at a residential Christian college and
qualifying students are eligible to apply for scholarships and grants
through Northwestern College.
We have had several students in the program who have been educated at
home and believe this to be an ideal transition to higher education.

*In the News From HSLDA
**Support Homeschooling: Write to Your Local Newspaper*
March 31, 2008
The recent events in California have raised the profile of homeschooling
and given us an unprecedented opportunity to educate more people about
the benefits of homeschooling.
Hundreds of media outlets have already covered the story fairly, but
there are many thousands more who could write a positive homeschool
related article. All media outlets need a hook on which to hang their
story. The California ruling, and subsequent outrage, is the perfect hook.
In order to gain greater attention for the education success story of
homeschooling, we suggest that you contact your local newspaper and
encourage them to cover your local homeschool community.
Below are some of the points we suggest you make. Please use your own
words so reporters do not receive the same letter. Click here for more
information. <http://www.hslda.org/hs/state/CA/>
*1.* The ruling made California the only state that requires parents to
be certified teachers.
*2.* HSLDA gathered over 250,000 signatures in just 10 days, which shows
just how much outrage exists against the decision.
*3.* The story has received significant media coverage, including
national venues such as /ABC World News Tonight/ and the /Wall Street
Journal/. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has also condemned
the decision.
*4.* Homeschooling is growing at an estimated 7-15% per year and
homeschool students score significantly above average on standardized
achievement tests. Click here for research on homeschooling achievement.
<http://www.hslda.org/research/default.asp>
*5.* Offer a local example of homeschooling success from your family or
local support group. This could be an award, success in a competition,
family that used to struggle in public school but is now flourishing in
a homeschool environment etc.
Alternatively, you could simply write a 500-word opinion article
outlining your reason for homeschooling and the positive experience it
has been.
It is my hope that thousands of reporters across the country, once they
receive compelling letters from homeschool families, will either cover
the story themselves, or simply print your letter.
We have an educational success story to tell. Let's put it in front of
the media.
*Eighth Circuit Appeals Court Rules in Favor of Homeschoolers
*/March 2, 2008/*
*
A federal appeals court ruled unanimously in favor of Home School Legal
Defense Association members Ron and Joann Fitzgerald on Wednesday and
held that school districts may not force homeschooled children to submit
to special-needs evaluations against their parents' wishes.
The United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, which
includes Missouri where the Fitzgeralds reside, held that the federal
Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act does not give public
schools jurisdiction over homeschooled children who may have special
needs. "Where a home-schooled child's parents refuse consent [for an
evaluation], privately educate the child, and expressly waive all
benefits under the IDEA, an evaluation would have no purpose. . . . [A]
district may not force an evaluation under the circumstances in this case."
As reported in the January/February 2005 Court Report,
<http://www.hslda.org/courtreport/V21N1/V21N110.asp> HSLDA has been
defending the Fitzgerald family's right to privacy for almost three
years. The Fitzgeralds had withdrawn their son, Sean*, from public
school after years of disagreement with the school over the provision of
special education services. When they started homeschooling Sean, they
had his special needs privately evaluated, and they decided to obtain
private special education services for him.
The school district, however, demanded that the parents permit a public
school evaluation for special needs, even though it admitted that it
could not force the family to accept any actual services from the public
school. An administrative panel agreed with the school district and
ordered the family to submit to the evaluation. HSLDA appealed to the
federal district court, which agreed with the school district. The
Eighth Circuit reversed these decisions.
"This victory is going to help homeschooling families all over the
country," said HSLDA litigation counsel James R. Mason III, who argued
the case in the Eighth Circuit. "The court recognized that homeschooling
parents may provide for the special needs of their children without
undue interference from meddling school officials."
HSLDA is representing another member family in New York where a public
school district seeks to evaluate their child.
