Dear Homeschool Family,
Happy 4th of July! We want to personally thank all of our military
men and women and their families for the sacrifices they have made for
our freedom. Freedom is FREE without a PRICE and that price is many
times comes at the loss of a loved one. Even God sacrificed his _only_
SON for our "FREEDOM", the greatest freedom, the freedom from sin.
A couple of years ago we were involved in one of the projects to
send a box of love to a soldier in Iraq and it was very rewarding. The
kids couldn't wait to fill the box as full as possible with all kinds of
goodies and things that we take for granted here in America. Then it
was thrilling to hear from him and how our box touched his and the many
lives of his buddies.
Since a small child I have loved this following poem about our
Pledge of Allegiance, I hope that you will too.
Blessings,
The Criders
*The Pledge of Allegiance*
As a young schoolboy in the 1920s, the popular American radio and TV
comedian Red Skelton learned the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance
from his teacher, Mr. Laswell. Inspired by his teacher's insightful and
moving explanation, Red Skelton remembered this lecture throughout his
lifetime and later recorded his memory of his teacher's words in 1969.
Twice read into the Congressional Record of the United States and
receiving numerous awards, this special rendition of the Pledge of
Allegiance by Red Skelton is followed by his very astute observation and
prophetic comment.
*I*: Me; an individual; a committee of one.
*Pledge*: Dedicate all of my worldly goods to give without self-pity.
*Allegiance*: My love and my devotion.
*To the flag*: Our standard; Old Glory; a symbol of freedom.
Wherever she waves, there is respect because your loyalty has given
her a dignity that shouts. Freedom is everybody's job.
*United*: That means we have all come together.
*States*: Individual communities that have united into forty-eight
great states. Forty-eight individual communities with pride and
dignity and purpose. All divided with imaginary boundaries, yet
united to a common purpose, and that is love for country.
*And to the republic*: Republic--a state in which sovereign power is
invested in representatives chosen by the people to govern. And
government is the people, and it's from the people to the leaders,
not from the leaders to the people.
*For which it stands, one nation*: One nation--meaning, so blessed
by God.
*Indivisible*: Incapable of being divided.
*With liberty*: Which is freedom; the right of power to live one's
own life without threats, fears, or some sort of retaliation.
*And justice*: The principle or qualities of dealing fairly with others.
*For all*: For all, which means, boys and girls, it's as much your
country as it is mine.
And now boys and girls, let me hear you recite the Pledge of Allegiance:
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and
to the republic for which it stands: one nation, indivisible, with
liberty and justice for all.
Since I was a small boy, two states have been added to our country,
and two words have been added to the Pledge of Allegiance: Under
God. Wouldn't it be a pity if someone said this is a prayer, and it
would be eliminated from schools, too?
-Red Skelton

*Homeschooling While Living On One Income
by Kimberly Treptow *
In the majority of homeschool families, one parent stays at home to
teach the children. This can make saving money on your children's
curriculum without sacrificing the quality of their education of the
uppermost importance. Homeschooling can be an expensive adventure but
it doesn't have to be. If one does their research and is willing to
take some time to plan and put together a curriculum it can be very
cheap compared to purchasing a "packaged" curriculum. Putting together
and eclectic curriculum in this manner can also benefit your child as
each child has their own unique learning style. You may find when you
purchase a ready made curriculum that the language arts works well with
your child and the math does not.
Where To Start?
The first question a parent usually has when deciding to put a
curriculum together on their own is "What should my child be learning
for their particular age?" World Book's Typical Course of Study has
always been a popular resource. Also, try visiting the website for the
education department in your state. This can be another great
resource. They usually list the state standards in detail. A visit to
the library should also yield books on the subject of what your child
should know at a particular age.
Where Do I Get The Lesson Plans?
The second question is usually. Where do I get all the curriculum or
lesson plans cheap or free? There are many places to get textbooks and
lesson plans cheap or even free.
The Internet
One of the best sources for this endeavor is the Internet. Start with a
search for "used textbooks" or "used curriculum" and you will find many
sites where other homeschool families list the books they no longer use
for sale. Another great resource is Ebay and other auction sites like
them. Next, try a search for "free lesson plans" and you will find that
there are literally thousands of them available. When you're focusing
on a particular subject simply refine your search to include the subject
you are interested in. Don't forget about unit studies. There are
several sites that sell unit studies for relatively cheap and some that
offer them for free.
The Library
Obviously, it would be a little difficult to find textbooks at the
library that one could keep all year long. But, the library is a great
source for reference books when you're studying a particular subject and
don't forget about all the classic novels your child will read
throughout the years.
A Little Help From My Friends
Some of your most important resources can be family and friends. Do you
know someone else that is homeschooling? Would they be willing to sell
or lend you books they no longer use?
Encyclopedias, reference books and classic novels your local library
doesn't carry can make great gifts for your children or family.
Support Groups
Local homeschool support groups are great for many reasons and they
sometimes have a book swap program.
Other Places
How about your local school district? They sometimes sell textbooks
they are no longer using.
Putting It All Together
By now your head should be spinning with all the possibilities. I know
your itching to get started but remember, focus and a plan are the keys
to doing this successfully. You can become overwhelmed very easily with
all the great resources out there.
Make sure there's ink in your printer and start with a plan. Decide
what your child should learn for that particular year. Start with one
subject at a time when you do this plan. Write it all down and develop
a plan of study. http://www.donnayoung.org has always been one of my
favorite sites for free printable forms that deal with planning and
managing your home school. Once you are satisfied with your plan of
study, search the Internet for lesson plans and curriculum, work on one
subject at a time. Remember, you don't necessarily have to plan an
entire year before the school year starts. You can plan a few months at
a time and work on the rest as the school year continues. This can be a
preferred method as plans tend to change throughout the year.
The most important thing to remember is that homeschooling should be a
fun and rewarding experience for you and your children. So most of all,
relax and have fun!

*7 Reasons Why Meal Planning Is A Great Idea*
*by The Menu Mom *
Planning meals ahead of time is a great idea, since there are many
benefits that come along with it. Meal planning affects many different
aspects of life, including your time as well as your financial
situation. No matter what situation one may be in, planning your meals
ahead of time is always a good idea. Meal planning makes it possible for
almost any size family to eat healthy meals everyday of the week on a
budget. It also gives you more time together as a family while
spending less money.
Saves Time
Planning your meals ahead of time will save you a lot of time. When you
visit your grocery store, take a list with you that shows everything you
need for your weekly meals. This way there will be no return visits to
the grocery store for something you forgot, and you won't waste any time
deciding what you are going to have for dinner that night. Forgetting a
key ingredient or having to fight in long lines at the grocery store can
be very frustrating, but meal planning can completely eliminate that.
Saves Money
Who doesn't like to save money? And if you can reduce the amount you
spend on grocery bills, you can save it up for something really fun --
like a special night out or a family vacation. Meal planning saves
anyone a significant amount of money, since meal planning is much
cheaper than eating fast food. Also, since you will be bringing a
shopping list with you to the grocery store, there will be no more
impulse buys and wasted food. We've all fallen victim to foods that we
suddenly have a craving for when we are shopping only to get home and
realize that we need other ingredients to turn it into a meal. And
having a shopping list will make it easier for you to clip coupons,
since you know what you will be purchasing each week. This means even
more savings to you and your family.
Meal planning allows you to create a calendar of what you will have for
dinner each night. If you create a menu one month at a time, you can
ensure that you aren't having chicken nuggets five nights a week. Have
an overall calendar of meals will allow you to shop for foods when they
are on sale and buy in bulk whenever possible.
Health
Planning out what you are going to cook for dinner will make it possible
to ensure you are cooking a healthy meal every day of the week. While
eating out is convenient in our ever busy world, eating fast food or at
restaurants is not nearly as healthy as cooking it at home. This is
largely due to the fact that you don't have control over what goes in
those meals. By preparing your own meals, you can choose healthy
options, like baked chicken, and add any of your favorites for a side
like a fresh green salad or steamed vegetables. Most boxed or frozen
dinners contain a great amount of fat and sodium, but cooking the meal
from scratch can eliminate them. You control the flavor and the fat.
You can take steps to reduce the amount of fat by adding seasoning and
spices to perk up the flavor.
Prevent Obesity
The rise of fast food chains in the world means that more people are
becoming overweight and obese. Obesity can bring on many health issues,
including heart or breathing problems. It is important to prevent a
child from becoming overweight and teach them the importance of balanced
meals. Cooking homemade healthy meals can do this. When you plan out
what you are going to make, you can be certain that it will be healthy
for the entire family. It allows you to have a better handle on the
nutritional content of your meals. You can also tailor it to each
family member's needs. If there is someone who needs to watch their fat
consumption, you can cook grill or broil instead of fry. If there is
someone that is trying to get more servings of vegetables in their diet,
you can help by offering two veggies for side dishes.
Spending More Time With Your Family
Because planning out your meals gives you more time during the day, you
can spend it doing something that really matters. Spending time with
family should be the first thing on anyone's priority list, and being
able to spend more time with them is a wonderful perk to meal planning.
You can use this time to either play with your children outside, or
maybe talk with your spouse about their day at work. With the time
saved with meal planning, the family can enjoy a walk together after
dinner, play yard games such as croquet or bocce ball, or compete in a
board game night. No matter how you use the time, it is special and
necessary to keep a family running. And when you kids are grown up and
look back on their childhood, those will be the times they remember most
fondly. Just think about all the home cooked meals that you look back
on warmly. No one cooks it like mom does.
Teaching Essential Skills
By including children in the meal planning process, they can learn many
skills that will carry with them into adulthood. They can help to plan
the meals, and learn about the different nutrition groups. Learning
how to assemble a balanced meal is a great skill to have. Measuring
different ingredients in the meals teaches children about fractions.
Younger kids can just play with the different kitchen utensils, which
allows them to explore and learn about the huge world they have yet to
explore and learn about. Spouses can get in on the fun, making it
possible to bond with one another by cooking a meal for each other.
Meals where each person can individually tailor food to their liking,
such as making your own pizzas or a taco bar, allow a great opportunity
for the whole family to cook and learn together.
Reduces Stress
Our world is hectic. We are being pulled in several different
directions each day. Because we live in a fast paced world, it is
important to do everything possible to reduce your stress load. We
have enough stress with our every day lives without mealtime stressing
us out. Planning meals can reduce your stress since you won't have to
worry about everything that goes into making a meal for your family. As
long as you bring your list to the store and buy everything on the list,
you will be all set. You can choose to either visit the store each week
or twice a month, rather than a million times like before. The increased
time you have will allow you to relax more often, and even feel great
when interacting with your children. If you are enrolled in a food
delivery service, having a handy list makes online shopping a breeze.
Have it with you when you log in to order food and you won't have to
worry about a thing.
As you can see, there are many benefits to meal planning. From the ever
crucial facts of saving money and eating healthier, to reducing stress
and spending more time with your family. Meal planning only takes a
little extra effort. And once you get the hang of it, it'll become
second nature and make you life so much easier. You'll be wondering why
you hadn't started meal planning earlier. And will all the time and
money you save you can spend on something that really matters -- your
family!

The IEP Manual
*
This is a wonderful manual for anyone that has a "special needs" child.
The book was written by Jim & Debby Mills. They are the parents of 8
children, one of which is a special needs child. They took him out of
public after 10 years in public school. They have never been sorry
about bringing him home and homeschooling him for the rest of his
years. Since that time Debby has helped many homeschool parents put
together IEP's.
They book has how to design an IEP with a curriculum. It has a
"dictionary" of what words are commonly used in an IEP. You will also
find samples of the different IEP's. This book will help you create
IEP's from grade school through high school. In the back of the book
you will find IEP forms that you may duplicate over throughout the years.
As a special needs parent, I have found this to be not only helpful but
very encouraging. As parents themselves they know what it is like and
have covered everything wonderfully. I would recommend this manual to
anyone.
To buy this wonderful book go to
http://nathhan.org/ResourceRoom/iep.htm. It is worth the $67!
*The American Presidents*
*/An Overview of US History
1776-2008
by Kim Kargbo
/*
This is a wonderful book to use at any time but especially during the
presidential election. How much do you really know about each of our
presidents? By the end of this book (around 30 weeks) I can assure you,
you will know them a lot better. The book is recommended for grades 2nd
through 6th but even the upper grades will learn a lot from it.
This book will need added resources that you can find at your library or
through specific companies that she has specified and the internet.
Your child will create a "Presidential Notebook" while during this unit
study.
The first week is dedicated to an overview and then the next 25 weeks
will be dedicated to each president. If you would like to go into more
depth, you can stretch this out to more weeks. The last three weeks is
set aside to the presidential process, job and election.
She has included some very helpful forms that you can copy for your
child to use on each president. She has also included some interesting
quotes that each president said. This can be a very rewarding study for
both you and your child. We highly recommend this Unit Study that you
can purchase through The Old Schoolhouse at

Keep Praying for the California Case
June 25, 2008
On Monday, June 23, 2008, HSLDA founder Mike Farris argued in defense of
homeschooling in the California Court of Appeal in the now-infamous
/Rachel L/. case. In February, this same court had ruled that
homeschooling is illegal in California. The court later vacated its own
decision in response to a request for rehearing filed by attorney for
the father, Gary Kreep of the United States Justice Foundation, with
substantial assistance by Farris and other attorneys at HSLDA. Farris
argued as a friend of the court on behalf of HSLDA's 15,000 member
families in California, as well as Focus on the Family, and Private and
Home Educators of California.
Farris was joined in his defense of homeschooling by lawyers
representing the Attorney General and Governor of California, the
Superintendent of Public Instruction, California's three largest
homeschooling groups (California Homeschool Network, Homeschool
Association of California and Christian Home Educators of California),
Pacific Justice Institute on behalf of Sunland Christian School, and
Alliance Defense Fund lawyer Jeff Shafer, on behalf of the family.
"The weight of legal and scholarly authority presented to this court in
defense of homeschooling is unprecedented," said Farris, who has argued
dozens of similar cases since founding HSLDA 25 years ago.
In addition to those who presented oral argument, friend-of-the-court
briefs in support of the right of parents to homeschool were submitted
by Pacific Legal Foundation, National Legal Foundation, Sutherland
Institute, Liberty Counsel on behalf of 13 members of Congress, Gifted
Homeschoolers Forum, et al, Seventh Day Adventist Church State Council,
Center for Constitutional Jurisprudence (prepared by noted law
professors David Llewellyn, John Eastman, and Erwin Chemerinsky),
American Center for Law and Justice and The Western Center for Law and
Policy.
Farris is guardedly optimistic that the three-judge panel will not
repeat its earlier error, but he covets your prayers. "The homeschooling
movement has been successful not because of the work of lawyers but
because the Lord has blessed it," noted Farris. "We must always remember
Proverbs 21:1---'The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord, like the
rivers of water; He turns it wherever he wishes.' "
A decision is expected within a few weeks.

*Petition to boycott McDonald's, supporter of homosexual marriage*
Make copies of this petition and distribute American Family
Association (AFA) is boycotting McDonald's restaurants because of the
company's promotion of the homosexual agenda, including homosexual
marriage. AFA asked McDonald's to remain neutral in the culture war.
McDonald's refused.
This boycott is not about hiring homosexuals, or eating at
McDonald's, or how homosexual employees are treated. It is about
McDonald's, as a corporation, refusing to remain neutral in the culture
wars and giving the full weight of their corporation to promoting the
homosexual agenda.
McDonald's donated $20,000 to the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber
of Commerce in exchange for membership in the NGLCC and a seat on the
group's board of directors. The NGLCC lobbies Congress in support of
homosexual marriage. Richard Ellis, VP of Communications for McDonald's,
and an open homosexual, was given the seat on the NGLCC Board. Ellis
said he was "thrilled to join the NGLCC and ready to go to work."
McDonald's CEO Jim Skinner said the company will aggressively
promote the issues they approve. "Being a socially responsible
organization is a fundamental part of who we are. We have an obligation
to use our size and resources to make a difference in the world ... and
we do."
---
Yes, I'm supporting the boycott of McDonald's until McDonald's stops
supporting groups that promote homosexual marriage.

*The Teacher Book Bag
*
Tomorrow begins a new month and Homeschool Teacher Book Bag turns
another corner. We will be opening our store for the first time. I can't
breathe a sigh of relief yet because there's a great deal of work ahead,
but I am indeed thankful!
Between now and September 30, we will be transitioning to our new
site where we will have free access. There will be no membership fees.
You will still be able to have unlimited downloads of items on the site.
We will continue to add activities to the site.
Meanwhile, we are committed to providing quality materials at
affordable prices in our store. The average item will run from $1.00 to
$4.99. A venue will be provided for you to sell your activities and
books with an 85% return. We do not expect you to sell exclusively with
us. You'll be free to sell your EBooks on other websites. Our
membership has grown to over 425 homeschooling families. What a great
opportunity for you to bring extra income into the family and still
follow through with your
commitment to your children.
We are kicking off the opening with a special 150 page PDF entitled
"Consider Me Red, White, and Blue: A Collection of Notebooking pages in
Celebration of America's Independence Day". Each image that went into
the creation of this collection has been tested to be able to print
beautifully in grayscale or color, whichever your preference. Every
image is available with a blank background, primary lines, and
intermediate lines. The collection includes copywork activities as well.
Attached you will find samples of pages in "Consider Me Red, White, and
Blue". Feel free to share them with your friends and family.
The location of the store as well as a link to it will arrive tomorrow
by way of email. The FIRST FIFTY HOMESCHOOLERS to purchase will receive
the upcoming EBooks, "A Child's Walk through Nature" (over 100 pages of
nature journaling pages and activities) and "Colors, Shapes, and
Numbers, Oh My!" (over 100 pages of activities and manipulatives to help
preschool through intermediate children with recognition, addition,
subtraction, multiplication, division, geometry and other skills,
absolutely FREE!!! That's THREE FOR THE PRICE OF ONE!!!!
I am obviously excited about the new changes. I appreciate your
prayers as I embrace the time ahead. Thank you so much for your support
within the last ten months of our existence! It can only get better!
God Bless!
