The Sunday before Easter, it is the start of Holy Week.<\/p>\n<p>The holiday is commonly celebrated with a special Sunday religious service, feasting, and community events held by churches. Some churches even offer attendants palm branches to symbolically wave.<\/p>\n<h2>Biblical Background<\/h2>\n<p>Palm Sunday is described by all four canonical Gospels. They state that Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey on a street covered with the crowd\u2019s cloaks and palm branches. Jesus\u2019s riding in on a donkey is supposed to illustrate his humble nature. This act was perceived by the Sanhedrin as Jesus declaring himself as king, which stirred the animosities that lead to his crucifixion. However, Jesus associated as a Prince of Peace rather than an aggressive type of king.<\/p>\n<p>The story contains heavy symbolism. The donkey is often associated with peace and the laying of cloaks and palm branches are signs of respect. In roman culture, the palm branch is associated with victory.<\/p>\n<h2>Religious Celebration<\/h2>\n<p>Some churches refer to Palm Sunday as the \u201cEntry of the Lord into Jerusalem.\u201d The feast is considered in the Twelve Great Feasts <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-379 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/match-inc.org\/samplenewsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/peter-fogden-489680-unsplash-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/match-inc.org\/samplenewsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/peter-fogden-489680-unsplash-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/match-inc.org\/samplenewsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/peter-fogden-489680-unsplash-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/match-inc.org\/samplenewsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/peter-fogden-489680-unsplash-683x1024.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>celebrated by Christian tradition. Some churches that have difficulty obtaining palm branches use olive branches or willows instead. Observers often take these branches home to commemorate the occasion and act as a blessing. Many fronds are blessed prior to the service. Some churches hold a procession of children, holding palm fronds, through the church.
