{"id":463,"date":"2018-04-03T18:02:07","date_gmt":"2018-04-03T23:02:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/match-inc.org\/samplenewsletter\/?p=463"},"modified":"2018-04-08T22:08:38","modified_gmt":"2018-04-09T03:08:38","slug":"soft-pretzels-fun-baking-for-kids-by-tammy-paquin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/match-inc.org\/samplenewsletter\/2018\/04\/03\/soft-pretzels-fun-baking-for-kids-by-tammy-paquin\/","title":{"rendered":"Soft Pretzels: Fun Baking for Kids ~ By Tammy Paquin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-464\" src=\"https:\/\/match-inc.org\/samplenewsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/pierre-gui-463462-unsplash-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/match-inc.org\/samplenewsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/pierre-gui-463462-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/match-inc.org\/samplenewsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/pierre-gui-463462-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/match-inc.org\/samplenewsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/pierre-gui-463462-unsplash-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>With three growing boys, the battle to keep healthy, easy and relatively inexpensive snacks in the house always seems to be one I feel I\u2019m losing.\u00a0 Combine that with the fact that the time it takes to keep up with the baking and cooking leaves me feeling like that\u2019s all I do:\u00a0 bake, bake and bake some more!\u00a0\u00a0 So when I found this soft pretzel recipe, I knew I had a win\/ win recipe!\u00a0 It was fun and easy for the boys to make for me and provided them with an inexpensive and healthy snack!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Soft Pretzel Recipe<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u00bd cup of warm water<br \/>\n1 cup of warm milk<br \/>\n4 cups of all purpose flour<br \/>\n1 TBS of sugar<br \/>\n1 \u00bc tsp of salt<br \/>\n2 \u00be tsp of yeast<\/p>\n<p><strong>Topping:<\/strong><br \/>\n1 egg white mixed with 1 TBS of water-you\u2019ll brush this on top of the pretzels so that the toppings will stick<\/p>\n<p><strong>OPTIONAL:<\/strong><br \/>\nWater bath:\u00a0 The water bath gives these pretzels that dark brown slightly crunchier outer layer.\u00a0 My guys don\u2019t like this so I skip this part and go straight to brushing with the egg wash but I\u2019ll include this part for you.<\/p>\n<p>-2 qts of water<br \/>\n-2 TBS of baking soda<\/p>\n<p>Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.\u00a0 Mix the ingredients for the pretzels in your stand mixer or bread machine like you were making bread. Allow dough to rise for about an hour or about doubled.\u00a0\u00a0 Divide the dough into equal portions (at least 12).\u00a0 The kids can roll the portions into long ropes and them fashion them into pretzels (whatever shape makes them happy).<\/p>\n<p>Allow the pretzels to rise another 20 minutes or so and if you want that brown, caramelized outer pretzel, start heating your water with the baking soda.\u00a0 You don\u2019t want it boiling but you do want hot.\u00a0 If you have a slotted spoon or other supportive kitchen utensil, it\u2019s perfect because you can place the pretzel on the spoon and \u2018cook\u2019 it in the water for 30 seconds before removing it and placing on the greased baking sheet.\u00a0 Repeat with all the pretzels.<\/p>\n<p>**You can easily skip the boiling water bath and allow the pretzels to rise and then go to the egg wash and toppings step.\u00a0 The pretzels will bake to a light \u2018bread\u2019 color. **<br \/>\nThen brush the egg wash over the pretzels and sprinkle them with kosher salt, or cinnamon\/sugar, maybe a mix of Parmesan cheese and Italian seasonings.\u00a0 Bake the pretzels for about 18 minutes until golden brown.\u00a0 Remove them to a cooling rack when they\u2019re done and hope they\u2019ll last longer than 2 hours in the house!<\/p>\n<p><em>Tammy Paquin is a work-from-home mom of 3 boys and the owner and publisher of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frugal-families.com\/\">Frugal-Families<\/a>, an online resource for frugality, finances, budgeting and everything else related to stretching the dollar and living well while spending less.
