\"\"Periodically, I get a brave teenager who wants to befriend me on Facebook.\u00a0 I say \u2018brave\u2019 because they first will have to put up with my frequent uncool posts.\u00a0 The ones where I take a picture of the lava lamp by my desk and speak in terms of \u201cgroovy.\u201d\u00a0 Or the ones where I post pictures of my Sugar Gliders doing cute things.\u00a0 Sugar Gliders are cute, but definitely not cool<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The worst is where I make some sort of dorky crack on their posts.\u00a0 Recently, a FB friend, whom shall remain nameless, posted that she was having an argument with her mom.\u00a0 First came the cracks:<\/p>\n

But then, other people were posting some serious stuff and I felt guilty having sooo much wisdom to share and only making jokes, so I posted the following:<\/span><\/p>\n

It started me thinking.\u00a0 I wonder if this girls\u2019 mom would be ok with me telling her daughter how to assert herself and essentially \u2018argue\u2019 better?\u00a0 Then I thought, do I help my kids learn how to argue\/negotiate well?\u00a0 I should.<\/p>\n

So I think it\u2019s part of our job as Dads to help our children learn how to beat us, out argue us, out negotiate us, and eventually get their way \u2014 especially when \u2018their way\u2019 is with the character we\u2019ve instilled.<\/p>\n

I want my kids to someday have a job and to not take \u201cno\u201d for an answer.\u00a0 And rather than them do something immoral or illegal, I want them to make a good solid firm case on how they can achieve their goals.<\/p>\n

My wife frequently argues with her brother about typical sibling rivalry.\u00a0 My brother-in-law maintains that my wife, Giselle, was the \u2018golden child\u2019 and never got in trouble.\u00a0 My wife counters back that if she wanted something, she learned how to make a good case for it.\u00a0 My brother-in-law would want to go to a High School party.\u00a0 He would ask, the parents would say no, and so he would sneak out . . . which eventually would have him be \u2018in trouble\u2019 and grounded.<\/p>\n

My wife would ask to go to the party, then submit several proofs on how she would remain safe, presented an action plan for any contingencies, offered to call upon arrival and departure, and assured them that she had the goals and morals they had taught her.<\/p>\n

So, of course they said yes to allow her to go to the party.<\/p>\n

[Yes, I married the \u201cgolden child.\u201d]<\/p>\n

And her experience is a good one for us as parents.\u00a0 Let\u2019s all agree to teach our kids how to make a good case for what they want.\u00a0 How to:<\/p>\n
